The King and I is a 1999 American animated musical film directed by Richard Rich and written by Peter Bakalian, Jacqueline Feather, and David Seidler, loosely adapted from the Anna Leonowens story, and uses songs and some of the character names from Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's stage musical of the same name.

Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), who together were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre.

In 1989 JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY, an anthology of the er's musicals, opened at the Imperial Theatre NY featuring "The Small House of Uncle Thomas"" ballet from THE KING AND I. Susan Kikuchi, daughter to original cast member Yuriko, danced her mother's role of Eliza. In 1918, dance legend Jerome Robbins was born in New York City. In 1954 THE KING AND I closed on Broadway after 1,246 performances.

That said, the album does feature a batch of major Broadway performers - including Julie Andrews and Mary Martin - singing some of Rodgers & Hammerstein's best-known songs. It may not be the best possible one-disc collection of their work, but it is a very good one. Track Listing.
