The only "King" recording that left me totally cold was Donna Murphy and Lou Diamond Phillips in the successful and critically well received 1995 Broadway revival. So, when it comes to Anna and various Kings, I'm very familiar. Even just listening to the CD, it is obvious that Sher's 2015 production is extraordinary. This is not just another revival of a classic. This is "The King And I" Reborn! Sher is successful because he takes Rodgers And Hammerstein seriously. This recording gets right to the heart of the dramatically and musically potent story. Ken Watanabe as the King hasn't much to do on this album, appearing as he does on four tracks. He does a pretty good job in the Yul Brynner role. It must be hard for him to measure up to (and surpass) his illustrious predecessor, but then again, who can?
