Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), who together were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's pioneering musical Oklahoma! paved the way for the modern musical and represented the golden era of Hollywood musicals. Oklahoma! marked the first of nine Broadway shows written by composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, who would go on to become the most successful team in musical theatre history and dominate the genre for the next two decades. It also single-handedly revived the art form, being the first stage production to seamlessly integrate themes, plot and character into the score and was the first musical to release an original cast recording. Since then, it has sold over two million copies and remains continuous in print due to its unabated appeal.

Oscar Hammerstein II had scant success in the decade between his groundbreaking collaborations with Jerome Kern on SHOW BOAT (1927) and with Richard Rodgers on OKLAHOMA! (1943). Reflecting on this period during his later triumph, Hammerstein filled a "Seasons Greetings"" advertisement in Variety with a list of his flop shows, titled ""I've done it before and I can do it again. In 1976, at the 18th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, the original 1943 Broadway cast album of OKLAHOMA! was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 1953 the second Broadway revival of OKLAHOMA! opened at City Center, where it ran for 40 performances before going on tour. It joined SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and ME AND JULIET, already running on Broadway, and prompted New York City Mayor Vincent R. Impelliteri to proclaim "Rodgers & Hammerstein Week.
Directed by William Hammerstein, the son of Rodgers' lyricist partner Oscar Hammerstein II, the new production was a faithful reproduction of the wildly successful original, retaining the Robert Russell Bennett orchestrations conducted by Jay Blackton, who had wielded the baton back in 1943 as well as for the 1955 film version. Even Agnes De Mille's revolutionary choreography was reproduced. Unlike the original Broadway cast album, which was recorded for 78 rpm records with their inherent time limitations, the new LP, recorded in early 1980, was able to include more of the music than ever before.
Oklahoma! (Original Cast Album 75th Anniversary). It's been said that Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical interpretation of Lynn Riggs's Green Grow the Lilacs was the beginning of the modern American musical. Likewise, the show also gave birth to the "Original Cast" recording, when, for the first time ever, Decca producer Jack Kapp took the entire cast, chorus, and orchestra into a studio to record this LP, which entered the NARAS Hall of Fame in 1996. Alas, in 1998, what's here sounds like something recorded in 1943 for 78-rpm vinyl albums.
