A magic circle is a circle (or sphere, field) of space marked out by practitioners of many branches of ritual magic, which they generally believe will contain energy and form a sacred space, or will provide them a form of magical protection, or both. It may be marked physically, drawn in salt or chalk, for example, or merely visualised. Its spiritual significance is similar to that of mandala and yantra in some Eastern religions.

Is Magic Circle something you work on constantly or in more sporadic bursts? It’s pretty constant overall. If it’s a year we’re working on an album, we tend to really hammer on that and pull back from playing shows, and then once the LP is out we kind of hit the live shows more and there’s a little more time for other bands to be tracking or recording. None of this stuff ever really stops though, it’s kind of a carousel-type flow. Magic Circle’s lyrics have normally been about magical, occult and fantastical topics. At this point, everyone knows the deal and have made up their mind whether they care or not. Three of us have been in a bunch of bands indebted to ’80s hardcore and punk and have made a lot of records doing that stuff. That’s where we came from, but we’ve all always been fans of a pretty wide array of music.

The Magic Circle, Music Technology, Jun 1993. The new album, simply entitled Orbital, is likely to spread the word even further. Although a product of the studio, even here the music's conception and execution bears witness to the duo's highly intuitive relationship with the sort of gear that still has many people stuck on page one. To the sequencers has now been added 8-track digital recording, in the shape of the Alesis ADAT, but of course the state of this art as well as any other has been effortlessly absorbed into the Orbital way.
