Fundamental is the ninth studio album by English synthpop duo Pet Shop Boys. It was released in May 2006 in the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan and Canada. It was released in late June 2006 in the United States. The album entered the UK Albums Chart at number five on 28 May 2006 (see 2006 in British music). In the US the album peaked at selling 7,500 copies in its first week.

By the time Pet Shop Boys came along, pop was fairly adult, and they certainly sold adult-like pop: reserved and witty, even arch. Funny thing about them, though: They're one of the first acts I can think of to have navigated their own career-long growing-up with a form of electronic music.

The Further Listening album really is an unmitigated joy, isn't it, even with the ringtones and the single mix of Numb, which will never be a particularly good song however many verses you chop out. The unreleased songs, especially The Performance of My Life and the Sodom demo, are worth it alone, but more than that the disc actually is a delight to play through in order, which certainly isn't the case with every bonus album. Jolly well done everyone.

A few things make this album stand out in the Pet Shop Boys catalogue. It was the first album in a long while where they managed to find a cohesive sound and stick with it. It's one of only a handful albums without a total miss. And their most in-your-face attempts at political/societal criticism/mockery (I'm With Stupid, Integral) are more in a league with Opportunies or Shopping than The Night I Fell In Love or Ego Music which at that point in their career came as a relief. So what could go wrong here? While the songwriting is on a relatively high level, there are very few standout tracks. Perhaps Minimal, Twentieth Century or Psychological but on earlier albums these would never have been regarded as such. Also, judging by the demos that have seen the light of day, producer Trevor Horn kind of stuck with what they had given him. He didn't persuade them to dump the novelty effects on Sodom+Gomorrah and only embellished the bombast of Integral when the PSB themselves came up with a much more interesting remix a year later. In one fell swoop, the PSB's make a mockery once again of the electro synth-pop competition. The likes of Hot Chip, Tiga, Fischerspooner and numerous other also-rans can only run and hide in embarrassment as "Fundamental" sees the elder statesmen of British pop, Messrs Tennant and Lowe on mighty fine form. A mixture of the upbeat and the melancholy, this is arguably their most satirical album to date, taking swipes at everything from ID cards to reality TV culture to the Bush/Blair "special relationship". As always, it's great to have them back.

"Fundamental" hits the store: I decided to buy this special edition (a "Very/Relentless" kind of release, but with major differences). The original album opens with "Psychological", a nice, dark electro track that was released on 12" a few months ago for the clubs. To the listening of the rest of the CD, one get the point fast: if you are stuck in 1984, this might be the album of the year for you: go and get it. The 80's sounds are everywhere: even on the remix CD which features tracks you'd thunk they where popular around 1985 (example: "Integral" is massively inspired by Dead Or Alive's "Spin Me Round"). If you expect the poppy Eurohouse à la "Very" or their "Relentless" Technoïsh side on "Fundamental", you won't find it intact. I personally don't like synth pop much. The little I listen to from the Pet Shop Boys in that genre range from "Behaviour" to "Nightlife". Highlights: The lyrics of Neil Tennant are well written (as always), even if I see some redundant elements and/or sentences (example: "Where angels fear to tread" in "The S&G Show" was previously heard in "Discoteca" on the album "Bilingual"). Melodically, the Boys are still performing very well in general. The bad points: The rock touch is, still, awful. There are more ballads than what I have thought. Some are good, some aren't. Some of the remixes are boring or just bad. Their collaboration with Elton John on "On Private" will probably be a big gay anthem. The trancey keyboards sounds à la Safri Duo are too much for me. Depending of who you are and what you are listening to most often, you may like or dislike "Fundamental". Since I am not a "80's revival fan", this is not my cup of tea.
