Prince Edward Islander Catherine MacLellan turns in an album of light country pop that ticks all the boxes in the mainstream country rule book. The melancholy 'Until One Of Us Goes' is a real highlight, and shows a depth absent on Water In The Ground. There’s even an experiment with guitar feedback squalling in the background of 'February Song'. Water In The Ground is undoubtedly a well performed and realised album, but it lacks any of the edge that can occasionally be glimpsed on its predecessor. While fans of straight up country may well take it to their hearts, too often the familiar structures and ideas reduce it to little more than pleasant background music.

Here’s a vote for Catherine MacLellan, whose upcoming third album will melt more than a few hearts this miserable winter. Seriously, if your throat is lump-free after the devastating goodbye song ‘Flowers On Your Grave’, check your pulse. MacLellan is that good and that ready for prime time.

Catherine MacLellan is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter, currently based in Prince Edward Island. The daughter of Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan, she was born and raised in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Before beginning her solo recording career, she sang with The New Drifts, a four piece band featuring Island musicians James Phillips (guitar, mandolin), Stéphane Bouchard (bass) and Dave Gould (drums & percussion). She followed up with Water in the Ground in 2009; Dark Dream Midnight was included as a bonus disc with physical copies of that album. She toured Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom throughout 2009 to support the album, including performances on CBC Radio's Canada Live and The Vinyl Cafe. Her album Silhouette was released by True North Records in July 2011. Her album "The Raven's Sun" was released August 2014.
