All Nerve, the new album from alt-pop icons the Breeders comes packaged with a particularly weighty version of that narrative. It’s the band’s fifth full-length and first since 2008’s Mountain Battles, but perhaps more importantly, it’s the first album in 25 years to feature-in addition to Kim Deal on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, and her sister Kelley on guitar-bassist Josephine Wiggs and drummer Jim MacPherson. But the Breeders avoid this trap: While its title is a double entendre that implies both courage and open-wound neuroses, All Nerve is smoothly confident.

However, All Nerve isn't so much a conscious attempt to re-create the past as it is the rekindling of a special chemistry. That chemistry is especially strong when the Breeders try new things. Wiggs gets her first lead vocal on an album track with "MetaGoth," and her unflappable cool gives it a dark, restless post-punk beauty that isn't like anything else in the Breeders' songbook. Meanwhile, "Dawn: Making an Effort" is as vast and hopeful as a sunrise, with an openness that's all the more heartwarming because it's so unexpected.

From the Pixies 1988 classic Gigantic onwards, Deal has specialised in lyrics that manage to be both haunting and elusive, and All Nerve is no exception, throwing up far more questions than answers. Do the words that float over the lulling, hypnotic bassline and torpid guitars make Walking With the Killer (a song Deal first recorded solo five years ago) a latter-day murder ballad told from the viewpoint of the victim – I didn’t know it was my night to die, but it really was – or something less straightforward, more metaphorical?

All Nerve is the fifth full-length studio album by American alternative rock band The Breeders, released on March 2, 2018, 10 years after their previous album Mountain Battles (2008). A Stereogum article in June 2016 reported that the band was recording new material at their Ohio studio and in October 2017 they released the first single from the album titled "Wait in the Car".

All Nerve finds The Breeders sounding more ecstatic and less restrained than anytime since Last Splash originally soaked the alt-rock scene. It's sincereIt's The Breeders missing album, what should have been released in 1994. It's not pseudo retro or grasping for a vintage sound. It's sincere and real and classic.

The Breeders’ new album features their iconic Last Splash lineup. It is smoothly confident with many moments of bliss, even as the lyrics evoke isolation, frustration, and scuzz. All Nerve is not in the same league as Last Splash, but it is an exhibition of a band with alarmingly strong musical chemistry making relevant music - and enjoying doing so - a quarter of a century on from their most notable landmark.
