Animated Melancholy Motoric Thoughtful. Zino Francescatti, Rudolf Baumgartner, Regis Pasquier. Bach: Concertos pour violon. Lean, lithe, and lovely, this 1972 recording of Bach's two solo violin concertos plus his double violin concerto played by French violinist Zino Francescatti will warm the hearts of those who miss straightforward, modern instrument performances of these standard repertoire works. Although of Italian extraction, Francescatti is clearly a French player: his tone is lean, clean, and direct; his technique is lithe, subtle, and strong; and his interpretations are sweet, tender, and lovely.

Zino Francescatti: Great Violin Concertos: Mendelssohn, Bruch, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Chausson. by George Szell;Zino Francescatti; The Cleveland Orchestra. Concerto in E minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 64: Concerto in E minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 64: II. Andante by George Szell;Zino Francescatti; The Cleveland Orchestra. This Sony "Great Performances" title marks the reissue of two of violinist Zino Francescatti's best stereo Concerto recordings - the Mendelssohn with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra and the Tchaikovsky with Thomas Schippers and the New York Philharmonic.

In the early 1950s, when these recordings were made, Zino Francescatti ranked among the top violin virtuosos of the day. This 2-disc set is a reminder of how good he was, and the excellent transfers enhance the pleasure. The partnership with Mitropoulos strikes sparks in the concertos, the violinist"s Franco-Belgian style and natural elegance playing off of Mitropoulos"s volatility and tension to good effect. Their pairing of the Mendelssohn and Tchaikowsky Concertos welds poetry to drama in exactly the right proportions

Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, is his last large orchestral work. It forms an important part of the violin repertoire and is one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos in history. A typical performance lasts just under half an hour. Mendelssohn originally proposed the idea of the violin concerto to Ferdinand David, a close friend and then concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
