Coinciding with the orchestra’s centenary in 2018, Sony Classical is excited to announce one of the most ambitious reissue projects of recent times, a comprehensive collection of the Clevelanders recordings made under the baton of their iconic fourth music director. These span the period between 1947 a year after Szell (born in Budapest in 1897) inherited a fine provincial orchestra from Erich Leinsdorf and began transforming it into the elite ensemble it remains to this day and 1969, a year before his sudden death shocked the musical world. The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878, and is one of the best known violin concertos. The concerto is scored for solo violin, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in A and B-flat, two bassoons, four horns in F, two trumpets in D, timpani and strings. The piece is in three movements: Allegro moderato (D major). Canzonetta: Andante (G minor). Finale: Allegro vivacissimo (D major). There is no break or pause between the second and third movements.

Of particular interest is Leon Fleisher's near-definitive recordings with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra of Beethoven's Concertos 3 and 4; let us hope the remainder will follow soon. Szell and his splendid orchestra also can be heard in Mozart and Brahms, glorious performances all. Zino Francescatti's Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky concertos are welcome, but it's odd Sony didn't fill out the CD with other recordings they have with the master violinist. The Shostakovich CD is particularly welcome, particularly in this new remastering.
