The instrument in question is a 1926 Wurlitzer Theater Organ, which, in a different era, used to accompany silent film projection, before getting moved to the Oaks Amusement Park. All the sounds heard on the album have been sourced from that organ, but it takes a certain leap of faith to believe that claim

Information on Ethan Rose.

The genesis of Ethan Rose’s latest album, Oaks, comes from samples he recorded of a 1926 Wurlitzer organ located in the Oaks Park Skating Rink in Portland, Oregon. However, the album isn't simply a compilation of these raw samples, as Rose manipulated the sound sources using digital processing to create ambient drones that unfurl with both beauty and grace. The tones conjured in On Wheels Rotating, for example, are bright and melodic, coating the ears like honey. In fact, the same could be said for all eight tracks that comprise Oaks.

Ethan Rose’s Oaks is as good an answer as I’ve heard. The compositional process speaks for itself. Rose sampled a vintage Wurlitzer organ, housed in the Oaks Park roller rink in Portland, OR, for every source sample on the record. The sounds are electronically processed and sequenced, for a dreamy glaze that varies from chirps to chimes to icy drones. As could be expected, there’s plenty of reverb to go around. It’s quite possible that my opinion of Oaks is irreparably biased by my own relationship with Oaks Amusement Park. Having played the album for friends with no connection, I’ll conclude that Oaks accomplishes the interesting feat of sounding like memory. In a hard-to-define way, the tracks here feature just the right levels of detuning and timbral similarity.

Ethan Rose is a musician, sound-artist, faux-pilot, and aspiring gardner who resides in portland, oregon - the biggest little town on the western coast of the usa. His music reflects his varied interests in old technologies, new sounds, and all things both inside and out. Much of ethan's music has centered around his fascination with automated instruments from years long past, including things like music boxes, player pianos, and carillons.
