The Mekons are a British-American rock band. Formed in the late 1970s as an art collective, they are one of the longest-running and most prolific of the first-wave British punk rock bands. The Mekons are often described as a post-punk or alt country band.

More traditionally rock-oriented and less prone to stylistic leaps than before, I Love Mekons is a strong, confident record that should have placed the Mekons at the forefront of the growing alternative rock market.

The Mekons' first album, The Quality of Mercy Is Not Strnen, was recorded using the Gang of Four's instruments, and due to an error by the Virgin Records art department, featured pictures of the Gang of Four on the back cover. After 1982's The Mekons Story, a compilation of old recordings, the band ceased activity for a while, with Langford forming The Three Johns In a February 2011 interview, Langford discussed the music documentary about the band, Revenge of the Mekons, directed by Joe Angio

Elton John, in his "Rock of the Westies" album recorded in 1976, had a song called "Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future. " One of the key repeated lines in the song is "Dan Dare doesn't know it, he doesn't know it, but I like the Mekon. British rock band The Mekons named themselves after the character in 1977. In May 2013, the BBC radio soap opera The Archers featured a storyline in which regular character Brian Aldridge was aggrieved by a local newspaper article that compared him to the Mekon.
