The Spice Girls are an English pop girl group formed in 1994. The group comprised Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice"), Melanie Chisholm ("Sporty Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice"), and Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice"). They were signed to Virgin Records and released their debut single "Wannabe" in 1996, which hit number one in 37 countries and established their global success.

The Spice Girls had materialized suddenly, seemingly fully formed, with their debut single Wannabe in June of 1996. It remains the biggest-selling single ever released by an all-female group in the UK. Complete with a one-take video in which they raised hell in a fancy London hotel, the song was bratty, with a ridiculous strutting drum track and a made-up refrain of zig-ah-zig ahh. It caught like wildfire.
The group then called Touch felt insecure about the lack of agreement and were frustrated with the direction in which Management Heart was driving them. In October 1994, armed with a catalog of demos and dance routines, the group began touring management agencies. They began to meet with producers, musicians and other business executives, among them were the composer Tim Hawes, and writers Richard Stannard and Matt Rowe.
