On their fourth album, Parquet Courts enlist Danger Mouse to produce an album of joyfully absurd, danceable rock music. It is straightforward but alien, simple but endlessly referential. As familiar as they seem (four white guys, guitars), Parquet Courts don’t have many peers. Their music is both passionate and removed, rock not as a vehicle of emotional release but the simple venting of calories. Over the course of six albums, the band has explored a sound rooted in punk and early-’70s art rock that relies on the past without seeming sentimental about it. Even their romantic material is prickly, hug-proof, more occupied by the anxiety of having feelings than the relief of surrendering to them. They are a rock band refreshingly unconcerned with what it might mean to be a rock.
Parquet Courts are an American indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York, that formed in late 2010.
A while back we brought you the new Parquet Courts’ full length Sunbathing Animal which came out this week via Rough Trade Records. Now though, The Brooklyn-based band have released our favourite track of the album as their newest single, Far Out’s Track of the Day with accompanying video, ‘Black and White’.
Album Sunbathing Animal. Black and white - 7-inch version Lyrics.
For the song "Black and White," they've released a video shot in, you guessed it, black and white. The clip utilizes three projections of shots that follow the band's Andrew Savage as he walks around New York. The video was directed by Parquet Courts member Austin Brown along with Johann Rashid. If you have yet to hear the new album Sunbathing Animal by Brooklyn indie-rock quartet Parquet Courts, Black And White is a great place to start. The second track from their sophomore long-player ignites with robust riffs and nasty amp distortion. But the rhythm section’s nervous, post-punk propulsions and the slightly out-of-tune slop strumming from Andrew Savage and Austin Brown reveal that the band still has a thing for Pavement’s thing for the Fall. This is not to say that Black And White or any of the other songs on Animal hinge entirely on ’90s nostalgia.
