Maïeutiste's first album received wholehearted praise and tremendous support from critics and publ. Gold version is limited to 100 copies. Yes, the compositions are complexes, varied and nuts, yes it’s a demanding music, yes it needs several listening before understanding and even appreciating the album for what it worth.

It has been eight years since Maieutiste release their demo, Socratic Black Metal, where they showed a great promise. Now, their self-titled debut is here, thanks to Les Acteures de l’Ombre Productions. The group’s sound is black metal in its essence, but as you listen to the record, you’ll be able to see that they are in fact so much more than that. The first thing that draws your attention to this release is the small details. Let’s deconstruct those. Musically speaking, the album has a very eclectic ambience, but works in a harmoniously way. Although its core is pure black metal, there are a few nuances in the sound with jazz, progressive and even classical influences that make it stand right out just after a first listening. Tracks like Lifeless Visions, Death To Free Thinkers or even Purgatoire are a fine example of that. The song Annonciation has a sublime touch that leaves you in a complete haze.

Unblack metal (or Christian black metal) is a religious philosophy within black metal whose artists are either directly against the Satanism prevalent in black metal, or promote Christianity in their lyrics and imagery. Unblack metal artists are controversial within the black metal subculture, because black metal's pioneers, especially those of the Second Wave, were anti-Christian.

Maïeutiste firmly does both, fitting well into everything within the black metal genre I grew up with and loved while simultaneously bucking tradition and creating an album that is full of surprises and a mix of styles from ambient to doom metal. New things come to my attention with each listen, though part of me knew the first time I listened to this self-titled debut that it was an instant classic and an album that perfectly fits into the lineage of slightly similar bands that I have always enjoyed.
