Despite the aggression its title implies, Kiss My Axe is the work of a softer, more reflective Al di Meola, who had become greatly influenced by Pat Metheny's subtle lyricism, but still had a very recognizable and distinctive sound. Di Meola's new approach was perfectly summarized when, in 1991, he told Jazz Times he wanted to be "enchanted" by the music instead of dazzling listeners with his considerable chops.

Track 1-17 is printed incorrectly on the insert as "Metal Is Forever", but is printed correctly on the CD label as "Black Rain". A name uttered with fear No smile, no tears They'll crush your skull with a blow And pile them in a row. The heart of Turisas was forged by four winds In a smithy high up in the skies On an anvil of honour, with a hammer of blood The Four Winds pounded.
