Gluck, Christoph Willibald. Opus/Catalogue NumberOp. I-Catalogue NumberI-Cat. Revised extensively in 1774 as Orphée et Eurydice, W. 1 Pieces based on 'Orfeo ed Euridice'. The often transcribed Mélodie was an addition to the French Version in 1774.

Orfeo ed Euridice (French: Orphée et Eurydice; English: Orpheus and Eurydice) is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. It belongs to the genre of the azione teatrale, meaning an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing. The piece was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762, in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa

Hofesh Shechter and John Fulljames co-direct Gluck’s opera. Most recent performance. There are currently no scheduled performances of Orphée et Eurydice. The Italian Orfeo ed Euridice was the first of Gluck’s great ‘reform’ operas. In it, he and his librettist Ranieri de’ Calzabigi sought to move away from the complicated plots and ornate music of opera seria, in favour of a ‘noble simplicity’, where music always drives the story. The opera’s premiere at the Vienna Burgtheater on 5 October 1762 was a great success – so much so that Gluck himself revised the opera for the French premiere at the Paris Opéra on 2 August 1774 as Orphée et Eurydice.
