The Great C major Symphony was the last symphony that Schubert composed. It was a Finished to follow his Unfinished, the first two movements of which he had just completed before discontinuing work on it (for reasons unknown). In contrast to his far shorter Sixth Symphony, also in C Major, it was named the Great – and is indeed a magnificent work, marking the culmination of his symphonic oeuvre. Schubert’s Great C Major Symphony D 944 was recently performed on February 1 and 2, 2018 by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under Mariss Jansons, in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz. That live recording has now already been released on CD by BR-KLASSIK. It is a star-studded and outstanding interpretation of one of the most important compositions of the Romantic symphonic repertoire.

The "Great" C major Symphony was the last symphony that Schubert composed – a Finished to follow his "Unfinished", the first two movements of which he had just completed before discontinuing work on it (for reasons unknown). Schubert began this composition in August 1824, or possibly even as late as March 1825. Most of the work on it took place in the summer of 1825, during the longest journey of his life.

Except that the playing is nowhere near at the same level as the conducting and the recording is nowhere near at the same level as the playing, this disc of early recordings of the great Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini would be a success. And despite the orchestras' extremely limited capacities, Giulini's charismatic personality, intrinsic sense of drama, and sheer strength of will achieve much: his 1954 Schubert B minor Symphony is almost entirely convincing and his 1956 Brahms E minor nearly totally persuasive.

He accentuates their melancholy beauty and depth without weakening his performance by overemphasizing their inherent dramatic power. The Berlin Philharmonic and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks - led by an inspired Eugen Jochum - interpret Bruckner as a heaven-storming mystic whose organ textured orchestral wall-of-sound is appropriately powerful or delicate as the music demands.

When Carlo Maria Giulini and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's recording of Mahler's Ninth Symphony was released on Deutsche Grammophon in 1977, it was immediately hailed by fans of the conductor and composer as a lyrical, colorful, dramatic, and consummately musical interpretation of the harrowing work. Re-released 30 years later, however, the performance does not hold up so well. Part of the responsibility is the Chicago Symphony's. Too often, the strings seem slightly sloppy, the brass too forward, and the balances poorly judged.
