L'Histoire du soldat (The Soldier's Tale) is a theatrical work "to be read, played, and danced" (lue, jouée et dansée) by three actors and one or several dancers, accompanied by a septet of instruments. The piece was conceived by Igor Stravinsky and Swiss writer C. F. Ramuz based on a Russian folk tale (The Runaway Soldier and the Devil) drawn from the collection of Alexander Afanasyev.

It tells the story of how a soldier sold his soul to the devil to exchange his violin for a magical book that reads the future. But the soldier discovers that he has lost three years of his life and that his beloved ones have forgotten him and so fights to get his violin back. lex Ollé says the story is very poignant

There are a few different examples of this. One theme is used in each of the dances ( Tango, Waltz, and Ragtime ), using the theme that Stravinsky used in Ragtime (which he actually composed before The Soldier’s Tale). Another theme is used in both The Soldier’s March of part II, and in The Little Concert.
