The Threshold Of Liberty. Overview (current section).

On the Threshold of Liberty (in French, Au seuil de la liberté) refers to two oil on canvas paintings by the Belgian surrealist René Magritte. The work depicts a large room with the walls paneled with different scenes or windows. Each panel reveals a different subject: a sky, fire, wood, a forest, the front of a building, an ornamental pattern, a female torso and a strange metallic texture featuring spherical bells (a common Magritte element). Inside the room is a cannon.

Vermillion Sky’ is a suite of 8 short stic vignettes, of which only ‘Opening of the Sculpture’ is played on a synth, namely a VCS3. On first hearing, some of the juxtapositions might seam surrealist, though Moore is not interested in the extremes of collage music. One of Surrealism’s most important patrons, Edward James was a willing collaborator whose sense of play initiated commissions for his homes from such artists as René Magritte and Salvador Dalí, including the latter’s iconic lobster telephone and Mae West lips sofa.
