The album was recorded in 1956 at the Café Bohemia and released in 1957 on the Blue Note label. The original release featured 6 tracks; another 11 tracks, including some alternate takes was released in 1984 on the Japanese Blue Note label, as BNJ 61003/61004.

Trumpeter Kenny Dorham played extensively with Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, and other New York heavyweights of the 1950's and 60's. He was a hot player, but he never built up his technique to the point where he could cut the most daring passages like his contemporaries Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, and Freddie Hubbard. On the other hand he said more with his sound, which came in several shades of blue-he paid attention to nuance. He was particularly drawn to Latin rhythms. Also Blakey had recorded a successful album at the Bohemia (a well-known New York club) the previous year with Dorham in the band. The song is sometimes incorrectly called "'Round About Midnight", as Miles Davis used this as the title of his 1957 Columbia Records album 'Round About Midnight that included a version based on Dizzy Gillespie's arrangement. It became a signature song for Davis; his performance of it with Monk at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival, which was heard by producer George Avakian, was crucial in securing him a recording contract with Columbia Records  . I have been slowly becoming a Kenny Dorham fan with each new album I have added to my library. I look foreard to new discoveries. Kenny Dorham was such a great trumpet player, but even considering the fact, that his recording period spanned about 20 years, starting with important contributions in the forties, when he played with Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and others, it quite seems, that he largely was taken for granted by the wider audience, which paid most of the attention to more glamorous players, namely.

The music is spirited hard bop and the repertoire has six of Dorham's originals (several of which deserve to be revived) along with the standards "My Heart Stood Still" and "Who Cares. The double CD is the best purchase.
