Paul Winchell (born Paul Wilchinsky; December 21, 1922 – June 24, 2005) was an American ventriloquist, comedian, actor, voice artist, humanitarian, and inventor whose career flourished in the 1950s and 1960s. From 1950 to 1954, he hosted The Paul Winchell Show, which also used two other titles during its prime time run on NBC: The Speidel Show, and What's My Name?. From 1965–1968, Winchell hosted the children's television series Winchell-Mahoney Time.

This is off an album my dad made in the 1960's called, "Chips of Wisdom" (my dad was a pretty famous ventriloquist back in the day). Ostensibly, this was an album for kids, but it was so disturbing we couldn't listen to it when we were little. I don't know if it was the horrible subject matter, my dad's acting or the album cover, but this thing gave us the willies. We had nightmares about it. The premise is that my dad takes his little puppet out into the woods to have some father/son chats with him.

Paul Winchell (Himself) was born Paul Wilchinsky in 1922. Coming into the public eye in 1948, he became one of the most famous ventriloquists since Edgar Bergen. Sadly, in a legal dispute over the syndication rights to the show, all nearly 300 episodes were destroyed. Winchell is fondly remembered as the voice of Winnie the Pooh’s pal Tigger and (later) Papa Smurf. Tessie Mahoney was Jerry’s platinum blonde cousin. She was named after Winchell’s wife Tessie Nina Moore. Many accused Tessie of just being Jerry Mahoney in drag! Like Winchell, Tessie was from Brooklyn (and sounded it). Jerry Mahoney (above left) was 'born’ around 1935. He was Paul Winchell’s co-host on Winchell-Mahoney Time.

It was fun to see Jerry Mahoney, Paul Winchell, and Knucklehead Smiff. Paul Winchell is one of the best ventriloquists ever, as well as being really funny. I watched them often as a kid, but I don't recall the actual shows, as I was only 3 when these aired! I'm hoping to find more Jerry & Knuck, but hopefully without Rudy Kazootie and Howdie Doodie.
