Had Concert at the Philharmonic Hall appeared the year it was recorded, it would been seen as a respite for folk fans to catch their collective breath before Dylan reappeared in his rock & roll Rimbaud guise. Heard for the first time decades later, it's simply a testament of his gifts as a showman and songwriter. Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). Silver Dagger (Live at Philharmonic Hall, New York, NY - October 1964) by Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.
Live 1964 isn't Dylan at his most explosive, or most innovative, but it does capture a Bob Dylan just starting to shed his folkist skin, folding in bizarre bits and signs of what would later become a full-on folk apocalypse. As primetime television so eagerly attests, a lot has changed since Bob Dylan first played New York on Halloween. But he remains fiercely anachronistic, a little out of place, and always on the verge of a big, snarky chortle. And that self-satisfied air of mystery might just be sexy enough to sell some underwear.
Dylan played nineteen songs in two sets, covering a tremendous amount of ground with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, harmonica and a determined voice. He was outwardly convivial, while provoking with his newer material in the second half of the amazing first set-from Gates of Eden through A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall. At the same time, he performed finger-pointing protest tunes, including Who Killed Davey Moore? and The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, with unabatedly venomous conviction. Although collectors of real Dylan bootlegs will have been aware of this material for years, this spruced-up authorised version is another technical feat from the Columbia boffins. It spotlights the 23-year-old Bob teetering on the cusp of acoustic folk music and the mind-expanding new horizons offered by acid, free verse and electricity. At this Halloween-night show from 40 years ago, despite his recent release of the all-acoustic Another Side of Bob Dylan, the artist had already made in his mind the leap into rock'n'roll's great beyond. While regaling his folknik audience with.
