Unfortunately, for Lorin Maazel, this symphony doesn't seem threatening or even intense. With the Cleveland Symphony he has a good orchestra under his direction. He aims to highlight the pleasing aspects of the score to the point of avoiding all the struggle. Since Cleveland can boast fine playing, I'm sure a performance of this caliber would have pleased many concert-goers. Maazel has a nice range of dynamics, and is consistently positive, meaning that all the looming oppression has been chased away. But there's nothing to separate this from competition
