Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, was written between 1877 and 1878. Its first performance was at a Russian Musical Society concert in Moscow on February 22 (or the 10th using the calendar of the time), 1878, with Nikolai Rubinstein as conductor. In Middle Europe it sometimes receives the nickname "Fatum", or "Fate"

Lorin Varencove Maazel was born of American parents in Neuilly, France on March 6, 1930 and the family returned to Los Angeles when Lorin was still an infant. In 1938, Bakaleinikov obtained a position as assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Maazel family followed him east so that Lorin could continue his studies with him.

Biography by David Brensilver. Throughout his career, Maazel recorded extensively and was known for his timeless devotion to musical creativity. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 2 'Little Russian'; Rimsky-Korsakov: Symphony No. 2 'Antar'.

Album · 1986 · 8 Songs. 17 - "Little Russian": I. Andante sostenuto-allegro vivo. By Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. 17 - "Little Russian": II. Andante marziale, quasi moderato. 17 - "Little Russian": III. Scherzo. 4. 17 - "Little Russian": IV. Finale: Moderato assai. 2, Op. 9 - "Antar": I. Largo-Allegro giocoso

Antar is paired with Tchaikovsky’s Little Russian Symphony (1872), a tuneful work partly based on Ukrainian folk melodies. While I enjoy this symphony – the opus is full of attractive and hummable tunes, such as the march-like 2nd movement – it doesn’t shine in the way Tchaikovsky’s best works do. The composition was finished when the artist was just 32 and just on the cusp of artistic maturity, but then revised a few years later to reach its present form.
