His fourth studio album, Stone Rollin', was released on March 25, 2011
One could disregard his third solo studio album for being the equivalent of a Civil War reenactment, sounding much more like "instant vintage" R&B than 2002's Instant Vintage
Raphael Saadiq's unabashedly retro fourth album doesn't try to "update" old soul sounds; instead, the former Tony! Toni! Toné! frontman works under the simple belief that those styles created in Philadelphia, Detroit, and Memphis during the 1960s speak as loudly now as they did then. So Saadiq, an artist whose career has failed to match his considerable talents, self-produces The Way I See It to sound out of time. Playing almost all the instruments, he keeps the drums taut, the basslines rubbery, and makes sure the tambourine remains a vital component of the rhythm section. His tightly wound guitar on "Staying in Love" even recalls his early New Jack Swing riffs (see: "If I Had No Loot"). The album starts rockily, however, with "Sure Hope You Mean It", a clever rewrite of "How Sweet It Is" that suffers from a bad mix.
The Way I See It finds Saadiq back in the territory he finds most comfortable, the classic Sixties soul style invented by Motown's backroom geniuses; and it says something about him and that label that it's a better expression of the Motown aesthetic than anything the company has produced for at least the past decade. The way I see it, it's his very own love-letter to an era when R&B wasn't embarrassed about having soul. But if you hanker after classic Motown, it'll not spoil your enjoyment of one of the year's most impressive and engaging albums. Joss Stone Marvin Gaye Motown Stevie Wonder.
Born and raised in Oakland, California learned to play guitar, drums, and bass at the age of six, making the bass his preferred instrument. Singing with a professional gospel group by the time he was nine, Raphael's musical education encompassed classical music, '40s spirituals, hymns, Jazz plus R&B
Raphael Saadiq, the multi-talented R 'n' B st/producer behind Tony! Toni! Toné! and Lucy Pearl has with his fourth solo album, made a classic. Or rather, The Way I See It, an expertly constructed collection of soul pop, 'sounds' like a classic. Its cleverly (some might say, cynically) assembled pastiches of 60s and early 70s soul legends' greatest moments is a bouncy, varied feast that's undeniably irresistible.
