A live version of "Too Much Too Young" was later released on a five-track EP, The Special AKA Live!, which went to number one on the UK charts. 'A Message to You, Rudy" was also released as a single. The Specials-a great band to party to-can't sustain the shock of having the speed of certain numbers halved. When the pace on record doubles-as in 'Too Much Too Young'-The Specials suddenly make sense". Goldman also criticised the lack of understanding of a female point of view in certain songs, but concluded on a positive note: "Perhaps I'm extra critical, because I (still) have great hopes for the future of The Specials"

Too Much Too Young" is based on the 1969 song "Birth Control" by Lloyd Charmers. It is sometimes wrongly stated that the song was banned by the BBC due to mentions of contraception in the lyrics. This is not true - however, when the song's promotional video was featured on Top of the Pops, it was cut off just before reaching the final line, "try wearing a cap". The song became an instant smash topping the UK singles chart for two weeks in January 1980. It was the first live recording to top the chart since Chuck Berry's "My Ding-a-Ling&. ead.

The specials keyboardist Jerry Dammers sped up the tempo and updated the words. This was the shortest UK of the 1980s. The song lasted two minutes and four seconds. This was the title track to the group's live EP The Special . The album was all Ska covers, and became only the second EP to top the UK charts (The first was Demis Roussos' The Roussos Phenomenon in 1976).
