The Specials is the debut album by British ska revival band The Specials. Released on 19 October 1979 on Jerry Dammers' 2 Tone label, the album is seen by some as the defining moment in the UK ska scene. Produced by Elvis Costello, the album captures the disaffection and anger felt by the youth of the UK's "concrete jungle"-a phrase borrowed from Bob Marley's 1972 album Catch a Fire but equally apposite used here to describe the grim, violent inner cities of 1970s Britain.

It’s an unequivocal triumph on an album that mixes the great and the so-so, the former outweighing the latter enough to appease fans, if not, one suspects, ex-bandmates. And We Sell Hope’s title fits: while it plays, the Specials sound like a band with a future, not just an illustrious past. This week Alexis listened to. Working Men’s Club: Bad Blood There’s a real alchemy to how this Yorkshire trio take well-worn ingredients – the Fall, Gang of Four, NY punk-funk – and it turn it into something more than the sum of its parts.

Have The Specials grown up into dislocated dreamers, sitting back waiting for love to heal the world? Have they watched a Question Time recently? Thankfully, their own tunes are far more pertinent. The album ends on a similarly optimistic, but far more realistic, note than it began. Looked all around the world, could be a beautiful place, Hall decides on deserted ballroom ballad ‘We Sell Hope’, but acknowledges that the best we can do on a planet run by madmen is to be the sanity you want to see in the world: do what you need to do without making others suffer.

The Specials have announced a new album called Encore-their first album of new material in two decades. It’s out February 1. Check out the tracklist. It’s the first new Specials record to feature vocalist Terry Hall since their iconic 1981 single Ghost Town. The album also features original members Lynval Golding and Horace Panter. The Specials are set to tour in 2019. The Specials’ last album of original material was 1998’s Guilty ’til Proved Innocent!.

When the Specials’ Jerry Dammers’ launched the 2 Tone label in Britain in 1979, his group was more than just a ska revival band with good taste in covers - they were a multi-racial spearhead of a post-punk movement combatting skinhead racism (fueled by far-right groups like the National Front) and the craven business-first classism of the Thatcher government. Now, with racist nationalism on the rise amidst the Brexit debacle, the Special’s third album - 38 years since the last one, More Specials - is well timed. As frontman Terry Hall puts it, the band remain horribly relevant.
