You wouldn’t expect the ’70s’ premier ska-punk band to return after 20 years out of the studio having transformed themselves into a cutting edge psych grime act – ‘Encore’ essentially mingles mellowed ska and reggae with funk disco, Latin hints and spoken-word pieces – but initially you might fear their socio-political edge has dulled

Entitled Encore, the new album is due out on 1 February 2019 and it follows 2001’s Conquering Ruler. It also features the group’s first original material since 1998’s Guilty ’til Proven Innocent! Encore also marks the return of original lead vocalist Terry Hall, who entered the studio with the band for the first time since 1981’s classic ‘Ghost Town’. Originally known as The Coventry Automatics, The Specials formed in Coventry in 1977. Combining ska, reggae and rocksteady with punk energy, the band helped pioneer the 2-Tone sound and they enjoyed considerable success in the late 1979s and early ‘80s. The Specials’ first official album since 1980 is a rich collection of eclectic pop that covers funk, ska and reggae with great energy and verve. Though just three of the original band are present on ‘Encore’-Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter-the album hits many of the group’s original marks, talking about mental health, race relations and political dislocation with intelligence and integrity, while the 2-Tone sound has the same hypnotic chunkiness that brought them to the forefront of British music all those years.

The 10-song LP, fittingly titled 'Encore', represents the first new music that Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter have recorded together since 1981's UK number one single 'Ghost Town'. The new album was produced by The Specials' founding members Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter alongside Nikolaj Torp Larsen, who will be familiar to fans as the band's keyboardist on recent tours. Those who have already heard the new material have praised the mix of new songs and reinventions of existing classics.

This is the lineup who recorded Encore, a new studio album that arrives roughly ten years after the initial reunion, 18 years after Conquering Ruler, which was the last album released by the Specials, and a whopping 39 years after More Specials, which was the last time Hall made an album with the band.
