In a fascinating interview in the CD program notes, German tenor Jonas Kaufmann and pianist Helmut Deutsch discuss interpretive issues that Die schöne Müllerin raises, particularly whether the singer is meant to present the point of view of neutral narrator (a view of one of the composer's contemporaries) or the lovesick young miller himself.

Die Schöne Müllerin Tracklist. 1. Das Wandern Lyrics. About Die Schöne Müllerin. Recognized as one of Schubert’s masterpieces, this song cycle tells the story of a wandering miller who follows a brook to a mill and meets the beautiful miller’s daughter (the title translates as The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter ) and falls in love with him. However, she’s cool to his advances, and she later falls in love with a handsome hunter. In despair, the miller drowns himself in the brook. The music is written for a high voice and piano, but Schubert himself would transpose the songs down so that singers with lower voices could perform them. Writers Franz Schubert & Wilhelm Müller. Die schöne Müllerin is a song cycle by Franz Schubert on poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is the earliest song cycle to be widely performed. Müller's poems were published in 1820, and Schubert set most of them to music between May and September of 1823. Schubert omitted several of the poems, such as a prologue and an epilogue delivered by the poet. The work was published in 1824 under the title Die schöne Müllerin, ein Zyklus von Liedern, gedichtet von Wilhelm Müller, which approximately means, "The lovely maid of the mill, a song cycle to poems by Wilhelm Müller".

Ständchen", D 889, (known in English by its first line "Hark, hark, the lark" or "Serenade") is a lied for solo voice and piano by Franz Schubert, composed in July 1826 in the then village of Währing. The lied is a setting in the key of C major of the "Song" in act 2, scene 3 of Shakespeare's Cymbeline. Schubert died aged only 31 in 1828, and the song was first published posthumously by Anton Diabelli in 1830.
