First volume of Schubert's Schwanengesang as originally published in 1829. Schwanengesang ("Swan song"), D 957, is a collection of songs written by Franz Schubert at the end of his life and published posthumously. The collection was named by its first publisher Tobias Haslinger, presumably wishing to present it as Schubert's final musical testament to the world. Unlike the earlier Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, it contains settings of three poets, Ludwig Rellstab (1799–1860), Heinrich Heine (1797–1856) and Johann Gabriel Seidl (1804–1875). Schwanengesang was composed.
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's three sets of the nearly complete songs of Schubert don't really get any better from volume to volume. His voice - his marvelous voice, the voice of German Lieder in our time - was sublime in the earliest songs of the first volume and just as sublime in the later songs of the second volume. His interpretations - the most sensitive, soulful, intelligent, and sublime - were sublime in the early songs and the late songs. And pianist Gerald Moore was still the accompanist without peer in every song
