Children of Alice is, after all, a new(ish) project by Broadcast’s James Cargill and its very name stands as a tribute to the group’s late, lamented singer Trish Keenan, whose favourite book was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This debut album is arguably Cargill’s most significant work since the soundtrack to Peter Strickland’s giallo-inspired cult movie Berberian Sound Studio which served as something of an epitaph for Keenan and featured her last vocal contributions.

Throughout the album, Children of Alice treat this in-between state as a place of growth, especially on "The Liminal Space," a gently unsettled study in reflective tones and bustling percussion that could soundtrack the journey from caterpillar to butterfly.

Children of Alice opens with The Harbinger of Spring, in which a strangled hum mingles with birdsong and children’s laughter. Beneath it all looms a three-note bass pulse, sounding faintly ominous, but it’s soon reborn in a palatable key. The record never settles into its unease. When a cuckoo clock heralds the hour, you notice the boing of its spring, a perfectly innocent technology. The album’s intrigue lies in its prelinguistic response to a hyperactive world. Invocation of a Midsummer Reverie collages a furious scurry of warped raga drones, distressed whistling, and erratic tabla. It ought to overwhelm, but the music, often aglow with Cargill’s warm synths, seems determined to witness mayhem with wide eyes rather than bloodlust.
