Two amazing master musicians, Chris Thile (mandolin) and Edgar Meyer (double bass) have been playing together for some 15 years, and began sporadic tours together in 2003, releasing a wonderful instrumental duets album, Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile, in 2008 and a collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and fiddler Stuart Duncan, Goat Rodeo Sessions, in 2011, and Meyer produced Thile's 2013 album.

Nonesuch releases the second recording collaboration by bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile-Bass & Mandolin-on September 9, 2014. The album features ten original compositions by the two artists, who have been performing together sporadically for more than a decade and made their recording debut as a duo with 2008’s Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile, which the Washington Post, among others, praised, saying Thile and Meyer are most enthralling when they pass a melody back and forth, fingers flying. Meyer also plays piano on the album and Thile plays guitar  . Throughout a lifetime of performing and composing, Edgar Meyer has turned the double bass into a modern virtuoso instrument that is equally at home in classical music and in the American vernacular.

In 2008, Thile released a collaboration album with bassist Edgar Meyer, and he also plans to release a collaborative album with Hilary Hahn. In 2003, Thile married fashion designer Jesse Meighan. In 1995, the Thile family moved to Murray, Kentucky, where Chris' father Scott Thile accepted a position at Murray State University as a musical instrument technician. In 1997, Chris released Stealing Second and Nickel Creek released Here to There 2000–2005: Wander and Deceiver. Main articles: Not All Who Wander Are Lost (album) and Deceiver (Chris Thile album). Following the major success of the album Nickel Creek, Thile released Not All Who Wander Are Lost in 2001.
