Sounding Point is the debut studio album by the jazz guitarist Julian Lage. It was released in March 2009 by EmArcy Records. It entered the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart at number 13 and was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

Sounding Point didn't disappoint. I love the variety across the tunes. Each song has its own character. The instrumentation and arrangements, too, are distinctive. And, while this is Lage's album, he wasn't self-indulgent as is sometimes the case on first albums. His own great vocabulary enables him to effortlessly "sing" through his instrument, combining ingenuity and fluidity.

Julian Lage: Sounding Point. Lage was a child prodigy, playing in blues clubs at age six and touring with Gary Burton at the age of 12. He waited until 21 before making this debut album, so it had to be something special - and it is. To find music that is both abstract and instantly attractive is so rare that there are virtually no points of comparison. Each of the 13 shortish numbers has that "just right" feeling and everything is delicate, considered and beautifully textured.
