William Steinberg’s famous readings of Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra and Holst’s The Planets newly remastered at 24-bit/192kHz. 1 Blu-ray Audio disc (new quadrophonic remastering) + 1 CD (new stereo remastering) in DigiPack format. These recordings remain mementos of Steinberg’s brief tenure as the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director (1969-1972) – cut all too short due to ailing health – and are of the first rank both musically and technically. Mars", in particular, has both menace and real physical excitement, while once again the playing of the Boston Symphony combines poetry and polish with tremendous virtuosity. Sonically these performances always have sounded a bit bright on top and light in the bass, and the remastering hasn't changed that.

TITLE added to MP3 cart. Strauss, . Also sprach Zarathustra. Joseph Silverstein & Boston Symphony Orchestra & Seiji Ozawa. As a used CD, this Zarathustra is a great bargain. My only caveat is that Ozawa does find three or four places to suddenly slow the pace to a crawl. He loses momentum, but the playing is so gorgeous as to make such lapses forgivable. There's no doubt that the music is meant to be taken seriously.

Label: Deutsche Grammophon (DG). Also sprach Zarathustra, Holst: The Planets. Boston Symphony Orchestra & William Steinberg. A vivid image of Steinberg’s character as a musician has been given by one of his players in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra: ‘He was giving something to the people, handing it gently to them, beautifully.
