Writer(s): BOB MARLEY, CURTIS MAYFIELD. Bob Marley wrote this song during Jamaican elections in December 1976 when the country was divided between Michael Manley's People's National Party and Edward Seaga's Jamaican Labour Party. Marley was the most popular person in Jamaica, but he tried to stay politically neutral and helped people find shelter in that violent time. This song was first recorded by Bob Marley's original band, "The Wailers", in 1965 and was released as a single

In 1977, Bob Marley & the Wailers released the updated version on the Exodus album which became the definitive rendition and made in the UK. This incorporates parts of the 1965 Impressions song "People Get Ready. Impressions leader Curtis Mayfield, who wrote that song, was a big influence on Bob Marley, and "People Get Ready" contains many elements of Marley's message: unity, spirituality and struggle.
