Breakfast in America, Supertramp’s sixth studio album, hardly underperformed in reaching number three in the UK and number one in the US on its release. But it has gone on to sell over 20 million copies since, meaning it obviously counts more than just Alan Partridge as a current fan. Made by a band of Brits living in Hollywood, the album comprises a series of vignettes about ‘modern’ life in America. It is skilfully realised by its chief songwriters, pianist Rick Davies and guitarist Roger Hodgson, and is never too cynical or willing to bite the hand that feeds. But really the key element here is the unbeatable quality of the song writing and pretty much any of the ten tracks could have been hit singles.
Despite Supertramp's own misgivings, the album was well received by critics, and when released in November 1975, it broke both the UK Top Twenty and the US Top Fifty in spite of its singles all being commercial flops. released in April 1977, spawned a hit single with "Give a Little Bit" (number 15 US, number 29 UK, number 8 in Canada), first written by Hodgson at 19 or 20 years of age before he introduced it to the band for recording five to six years later. Supertramp continued to play several Hodgson-penned songs during live shows following their reunion.
Supertramp never had the lothario reputation of, oh, the Rolling Stones or Steel Panther, but Davies' lighthearted ode to road romance indicates there were a few shenanigans in this camp, too. It's also one of the best executed trade-offs between Davies and Hodgson vocals and features one of the hottest guitar solos the latter ever brought into 'Tramp town. This Supertramp song culminates in a multi-tracked call-and-response singalong that spotlights the group's Spectorian ambitions. 7. Supertramp - "Take The Long Way Home". Supertramp secured itself a regular show-closing song with this Top 10 single from Breakfast In America, a bouncy melody awash with keyboards and featuring a rich sax-and-harmonica exchange between Helliwell and Davies. 6. Supertramp - "Sister Moonshine".
Performer: Supertramp Album: Retrospectacle The Supertramp Anthology Label: A&M Records. It was their first album after original member Roger Hodgson left the band, leaving Rick Davies to handle the songwriting and singing on his own. The album features the group's Top 30 hit "Cannonball".
After engineering Supertramp's Even In The Quietest Moments and Frank Zappa's Sheik Yerbouti, Henderson went freelance in 1978 and co-produced the Climax Blues Band's Gold Plated and a Tubes live album. Geoff Emerick had been asked to engineer Even In The Quietest Moments, and when he couldn't do it I ended up doing the recording and he ended up doing the mix," Henderson explains.
