The Exbats story began in 2009, when the McLain family was living in Portland, Oregon. Ken and his wife were serious rock & roll fans from way back, and Inez got her name from Mike Nesmith's nickname "Papa Nez" (Inez's folks were both big on the Prefab Four). Ken, who cites the Ramones and Blondie as key influences, began writing songs with Inez bashing along on the drums, and they were happy enough with the results that before long they began playing in public  . A second cassette album, I Got the Hots for Charlie Watts, followed in January 2018, and February 2019 saw the release of E Is for Exbats, a vinyl collection that brought together highlights from the two cassettes as well as a re-recorded version of "Are We Dead Ye.

Charles Robert Watts (born 2 June 1941) is an English drummer, best known as a member of the Rolling Stones since 1963. Originally trained as a graphic artist, he started playing drums in London's rhythm and blues clubs, where he met Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards.
