One of the very bright lights in the world of American roots music is a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter out of Chicago, Joel Paterson. Joel Paterson started playing guitar in the mid 80’s. As he said : "I borrowed a guitar from somebody and tried to teach myself by ear and immediately got into the blues. My mom actually had a Lightnin’ Hopkins LP, The Best of Lightnin' Hopkins on the Tradition/Everest label.

Joel Paterson and The Modern Sounds is a Chicago based rhythm trio featuring Joel Paterson on guitar, vocals and steel guitar; Beau Sample on string bass and vocals; Alex Hall on drums and vocals. This big little band is dedicated to performing many styles of traditional American music, specializing in classic blues, hot jazz, western swing, rockabilly and everything in between.

Lightning is the fourth studio album from the indie pop duo Matt & Kim, written, produced, performed and recorded by them in their New York apartment between January and July 2012, using Logic Pro. The ten-track set is an electronic indie pop album which member Matt Johnson described as being upbeat, while on some tracks being a little darker. The group decided "to do as little possible to the songs production-wise and still have them be strong" unlike their previous studio project Sidewalks.
