Brain Salad Surgery was Emerson, Lake and Palmer's last great album, a final moment of collaborative pomp before the group began to fragment into three separate entities. Sure, it might seem a bit over the top. But that's the thing about ELP at their peak: There really was no top. Carl Palmer admitted as much in the liner notes included in the album's reissue. We're not a straightforward rock band," he said.

Their ‘Brain Salad Surgery’ was released on November 19th and became one of the best band’s records. When the band decided to part ways with their label Atlantic Records, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, Carl Palmer, and their manager, Stewart Young decided to form their own label. Around January 1973 they bought an abandoned cinema in Fulham, West London and converted it into a rehearsal room and studio, which would later be named Manticore Records. They had planned not only to implement their own ideas, but also to record other, less famous bands. However, Brain Salad Surgery didn't need singles to become ELP’s most popular album. The second track on the album is an adaptation of the 4th Movement of 1st Piano Concerto by Alberto Ginastera.

Working title was Whip Some Skull on Yer, but was changed to Brain Salad Surgery after a line in the same year’s (1973) from Dr. John’s Right Place, Wrong Time. Brain Salad Surgery Q&A.
