James Taylor's long career has had many phases, but it did not start auspiciously. His early years produced a single poorly received, self-titled debut on Apple Records in 1968. It sank like a stone despite the presence of such classics as "Carolina in My Mind" and "Something in the Way She Moves. Yet James' gentle voice belied a troubled soul. Signing with Columbia, Taylor began a third phase, maintaining his winning streak with the five platinum-sellers collected in "Original Album Classics," a low-priced British import containing five remastered CDs in cardboard sleeves and a thin slipcase but no liner notes or booklet. Released between 1977 and 1988, these records offer songs of great depth and maturity, and the first three discs represent some of his most consistent and pleasing work.
