Artist: Dermot Byrne. Label: Independent Release. Re-releases can sometimes falter as they struggle to find purchase in another time, another place, but Dermot Byrne’s 1995 solo recording is a timeless delight that straddles centuries with the agility and ease that Byrne’s fingers ricochet across the reeds. A long-time anchor of Altan, Byrne’s subtlety as an accordion player has always marked him apart. His tune selections here are inspiring: hornpipes and highlands are afforded the same meticulous and filigree treatment, so that The Victoria Hornpipe (borrowed from Dermot.

Dermot John Morgan (31 March 1952 – 28 February 1998) was an Irish comedian, actor and previously a school teacher, who achieved international recognition for his role as Father Ted Crilly in the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted. Morgan was born on 31 March 1952 in Dublin. His parents were Donnchadh Morgan, an artist and sculptor with a passion for drama, and Hilda "Holly" Stokes, a "celebrated beauty" from Dún Laoghaire.

Playing fingerstyle, slide guitar and harmonica he is a regular performer on the club and festival scene and his music has received critical acclaim in music press. His influences are the blues masters such as Son House, Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell and Texas folk-blues artist Huddie Leadbetter.

This album from Dermot Byrne and Floriane Blancke is a tasteful mixture of their musical backgrounds. Dermot, who hails from Donegal, was influenced by the traditional music of South West Donegal and by it's musicians. Teelin, where Dermot's father comes from has a deep musical heritage and Dermot was fortunate to meet and play with many of the musicians of the area from whom he learned many tunes and the traditional etiquette that went with the music
