Transangelic Exodus, Ezra Furman's fourth solo album, is the most varied, dreamy, restless, sparse, and cinematic outing of his career. His protagonist is in love with an angel; the government is after them. Angels are illegal - as is harboring them. Transangelic" refers to the notion here that humans can grow wings and become angels after a surgical procedure. Some believe this is contagious, while others are offended and want it outlawed
Ezra Furman Explains His Creative Reset With 'Queer Outlaw Saga' Album 'Transangelic Exodus'. You’ll hear other musical touchstones on Transangelic Exodus as well. Its xylophones, cellos, horns, pounding toms, hectic, changing tempos and fraught vocals are a long way from the '60s-styled rock that Furman celebrated with his early band Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, and more recently, Ezra Furman and the Boy-Friends.
Released February 9, 2018. Transangelic Exodus Tracklist. 1. Suck the Blood from My Wound Lyrics. About Transangelic Exodus. The CD inlay starts with a section of explanation/scene setting: When my darling grew wings And the government came for us We lived in a red Camaro When your body’s illegal And the people sworn to protect you Refuse to protect you One may have to re-draw the map That once represented home And perhaps this Was always waiting to happen Perhaps we were always marked for outlawhood Ever since we. were kids Ever since we fell in love the wrong way And the exodus began.
Transangelic Exodus is a beautiful, dark, twisted, painful and yet hopeful tale.

Gender-fluid rock musician Ezra Furman delivers one of the best albums that only a few people have heard with his self-described, ‘Queer Outlaw Saga,’ ‘Transangelic Exodus. I’m in love with an angel, and a government is after us, and we have to leave home because angels are illegal, as is harboring angels. Whoa! Totally ambitious, creative, conceptual albums can be hard to come by. When one comes along, it’s usually incredibly special, as well as completely under the radar.
It’s surely long overdue that the transangelic community – people born knowing they’re illegally angels inside and transitioning with an operation to release their wings – should have their struggle documented in a leftfield alt-pop queer outlaw saga concept album. And, at long last, here it is. Chicago art-pop provocateur Ezra Furman’s eighth album (with various backing bands) tells the half-true memoir of Furman falling for a transangel and having to go on the run while shadowy government agencies and Nazi gangs hunt the lovers down.
Transangelic Exodus, Ezra Furman’s second album for Bella Union, is a new landmark for the American singer-songwriter: not a concept record, but almost a novel, or a cluster of stories on a theme, a combination of fiction and a half-true memoir, according to its author. A personal companion for a paranoid road trip.
