Recorded at the celebrated Club Saint Germain, the formation presented here marks the third incarnation of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, with trumpeter Lee Morgan (then only 20 years old), tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merrit. For the last two tunes, bop drum pioneer Kenny Clarke (who was living in Paris) substitutes Blakey. Besides the individual gifts of each member, the group forms a compact unit with a cohesive sound. The Jazz Messengers were an influential jazz combo that existed for over thirty-five years beginning in the early 1950s as a collective, and ending when long-time leader and founding drummer Art Blakey died in 1990. Blakey led or co-led the group from the outset. Art Blakey" and "Jazz Messengers" became. In February 1979, they recorded the third Messengers album entitled Night in Tunisia for Philips. In November 1979 they recorded One by One, a live album in Italy, for the Italian Palcoscenico label. In 1979 Blakey decided to assemble an 11-piece "big band" to take on a European tour in 1980. When Art Blakey’s Messengers descended on Paris in December 1958, two recording dates were set – the prestigious Olympia concert hall, and the more funky Club St Germain. It was Blakey’s strongest line up ever, with Lee Morgan (t), Bennie Golson (ts), Bobby Timmons (p) Jimmie Merrit (b) and a near identical playlist, including hits Moanin’ and Night in Tunisia.
