Hardy Fox grew up in Texas. After college he moved to San Francisco reveling in the free love days of 1967-68. He co-founded the much loved cult band, the Residents, where he was primary composer. Hardy retired from The Residents in 2015 but continued to compose for the group through 2018. In addition to his work with that band, he has recorded as a solo artist under various names including Charles Bobuck, Combo de Mechanico, Sonido de la Noche, Chuck, TAR, among others. Hardy no longer records anything at all. That era ended. Perhaps even death was not the reason.

Hardy Fox, a founding member and main composer of the mysterious avant-garde art rock collective the Residents, died at the age of 73 following a battle with brain cancer. It is with great sorrow and regret that The Cryptic Corporation announces the passing of longtime associate, Hardy Fox, the band said in a statement. As president of the corporation from 1982-2016, the company benefited from Hardy’s instinct for leadership and direction, but his true value came from his longtime association with The Residents.

Gingerbread Man is an album by The Residents, released in 1994. It was their first foray into computer graphics. Original versions of the CD were "enhanced" with animations that followed the music when played on a computer. The animations served as a basis for the costumes of the characters when a number of the songs were performed in the 25th anniversary shows in 1997. Later the same year regular CDs, with just the music, were released.

In other words "Chuck", as he's referred to onstage, is the purported name of the character long portrayed by Hardy Fox. Starting with Chuck's unveiling in the Talking Light tour, The Residents have released several instr. umental albums and singles under the Charles Bobuck name, as a measure of differentiation from the band's eponymous releases, which mostly feature texted music. But this album consists of standalone electronic music compositions that have not had a previous life in the Residents canon. If this backstory hasn't already confused you, know that The Residents have published a "Codgers on the Moon" Web site that purports to be the liner notes for this album, but which is really a distinct, identically-named effort that combines Bobuck's ostensible autobiography with several short audio files.
