In 1988, Morrissey launched his solo career with Viva Hate. This album and its follow-ups-Kill Uncle, Your Arsenal, and Vauxhall and I-all did well on the UK Albums Chart and spawned multiple hit singles. Replacing Marr, he took on Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer as his primary co-writers. During this time, his image began to shift into that of a burlier figure who toyed with patriotic imagery and working-class masculinity. I lost myself in music at a very early age, and I remained there. I did fall in love with the voices I heard, whether they were male or female. I loved those people.

When this album was recorded in 1993, Morrissey was at the peak of his career. The highly successful Your Arsenal catapulted him into fame in North America, and controversy surrounding Morrissey's character in Britain kept him in the public eye. And as the saying goes, any publicity is good publicity. Your Arsenal was a highly nationalistic album, and lyrically it focused more on Britain's plight than on personal, universally relatable subjects. Lyrically Morrissey has always rotated between the two settings: political/social matters and human emotions. On Vauxhall and I, he returns.

Vauxhall and I is the fourth studio album by English alternative rock musician Morrissey. It was released by the record label Parlophone in the UK and Sire/Reprise in the USA. The album’s title may be a reference to the 1987 film Withnail and I. Vauxhall is an area of London noted for its gay clubs (it is also an area of Liverpool), and there is also a British car manufacturer of the same name. Vauxhall and I Q&A. Producers Steve Lillywhite. Writers Alain Whyte, Boz Boorer & Morrissey. Bass Guitar Jonny Bridgwood.

Morrissey is, for many, the best singer and lyricist to emerge in the last 30 years. And Vauxhall And I is his greatest album. You get the odd album that’s dominated by a somewhat tougher guitar sound but that’s about it. As a consequence his best albums become so simply by having better songs on them than the others and that’s what sets Vauxhall And I apart. It’s the most consistent, high-quality group of songs he’s ever assembled. The lead up to this one had been tough. The deaths of three close associates (one of whom, Mick Ronson, had produced his previous album Your Arsenal ) within a year had hit him pretty hard. A period of deep depression followed

Features Song Lyrics for Morrissey's Vauxhall and I album. Album: Vauxhall And I. 1. The More You Ignore Me the Closer I Get. 2. Have-a-Go Merchant (live).
