No Prayer for the Dying is the eighth studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It marks their first line-up change since 1982; guitarist Adrian Smith left the band during the pre-production phase, unhappy with the musical direction it was taking, and only having contributed to one song, "Hooks in You".

Comparable to their more straightforward early work, No Prayer for the Dying quickly shot up the charts all over the world, but it was clear that the songwriting wasn't up to snuff when compared to such classics as Killers or Number of the Beast. The album also signaled the debut of new guitarist Janick Gers, best known for his stint in Ian Gillan's solo band and on Bruce Dickinson's solo album, Tattooed Millionaire.

But when Iron Maiden released their eighth album No Prayer for the Dying on Oct. 1, 1990 their health was on the wane and it showed in the album, which most consider far from their worst album but an unremarkable effort nonetheless. During the songwriting sessions for the album, guitarist Adrian Smith didn’t like the less progressive direction the band seemed to be taking with its songs and after co-writing the shimmery, poppy Hooks in You, he quit Iron Maiden following a decade of service to the band.

Well, if you’re Iron Maiden, you pick up a new guitarist, stick to your (tail) guns and do what you do best; be Iron Maiden. I remember when this came out (I’m starting to show my age her. and at the time much of the music press were beginning to question whether Maiden had an answer to the younger bands that they influenced. Their answer was this album. Gone were the guitar/bass synths from the last few albums. Gone were the slick production values that helped propel them to their rightful thrones as ‘the band to beat’ in the 80’s.
