Chuck Berry fans worried that the rock legend's recent death would complicate plans for the release of his first album of new music in nearly 40 years can lay those fears to rest. According to a statement released by Berry's estate following his death, the new LP - titled Chuck and announced last year on the guitarist's 89th birthday - is still very much in the works.

Chuck is Chuck's first new studio album since 1979's Rock It! (and obviously now his last one), and it shows an artist for whom age truly was a number, as he hadn't lost his creative and performing spark. I don't know of any other musician who sounds or sounded as vibrant and energetic at 90 years of age as Chuck does on this record. His guitar playing and singing are as lively as ever, especially combined with the latest, state-of-the-art recording technology.

For 65 years, Berry had been in front of audiences, generations of fans who came to think of him as the indubitable face of the Mississippi River, of the Open Road, of rock & roll personified, of the enduring inspiration of genius. Few people beyond family members and friends were aware that Berry, nearing 90 years old, was recording his first studio album since Rock It in 1979. Through our mutual friend, Joe Edwards of St. Louis, I originally met Chuck in 1992. We’ve stayed in periodic touch ever since.
