Stefano Bollani (born 5 December 1972, Milan) is an Italian composer, pianist and singer, also active as a writer and a television presenter. He has worked with such musicians as Gato Barbieri, Chick Corea, Bill Frisell, Sol Gabetta, Richard Galliano, Egberto Gismonti, Lee Konitz, Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, Caetano Veloso, Phil Woods, Hector Zazou and has recorded more than 15 albums with the trumpeter Enrico Rava.

Label Bleu has already issued the group version of Enrico Rava's appearance at the 2001 Montreal jazz festival, dedicated to the music of Miles Davis. This is the other half of the story, in which the Italian trumpeter is paired with Stefano Bollani, the pianist who made such an impression on the same trip. Bollani's contribution to the previous set was remarkable for its bold excursions into thunderous yet startlingly precise free improvisation, which never neglected the interests of the band.

This is the second of a projected series of four recorded live at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2001 (Montreal Diary A was issued last year). The program here consists of duets by two Italian musicians: veteran trumpeter Enrico Rava and the up-and-coming pianist Stefano Bollani. The mood is informal and convivial, Rava providing a lyricism and thoughtfulness that’s complemented by Bollani’s trademark whimsicality and edge-of-anarchic surrealism.
