High on the Hog is the most commercially successful album by the southern rock band Black Oak Arkansas. It is mainly known for its cover of the LaVern Baker song "Jim Dandy", which reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album prominently featured southern electric guitar licks and James Mangrum's scratchy, hillbilly vocals. All songs by Black Oak Arkansas, except "Jim Dandy" by Lincoln Chase and "Moonshine Sonata" by Black Oak Arkansas & Tom Dowd. Swimmin' in Quicksand" - 3:20.

This is probably the best-known album in the Black Oak Arkansas catalog, thanks in large to part to its hit cover of the LaVern Baker R&B classic "Jim Dandy. This effective update combines a countrified touch, some electric guitar fireworks, and a frenetic double-time tempo with the inimitable hillbilly vocals of Jim "Dandy" Mangrum to create a song that became a hit with both country and pop listeners. It is definitely High on the Hog's undisputed highlight, but the other tracks surrounding it also have plenty to offer

The playing is tight, the songs are infectious, and leaves me feeling happy when the album is done. I just looked over the song titles to see if I could recommend a song or two as the best track and it was too hard to choose. High'N Dry and Back to the Land are a little country folksy, but feel heartfelt and sincere. Jim Dandy, Mad Man, both display some serious chops. There is no filler on this album. I've owned most of their albums in the past and this one is the must have from their catalog.

Aldridge and Sarzo performed on the bands album, Slip of the Tongue. Announcing he was going to take a break from the music industry, following his stint in Whitesnake, Aldridge played in the band Manic Eden, with his former Whitesnake bandmates Adrian Vandenberg and Sarzo. The line-up included former Little Caesar vocalist Ron Young, during the 1990s Aldridge worked with numerous acts ranging from Motörhead to Ted Nugent.

Black Oak Arkansas was formed in - you guessed it - Black Oak, Arkansas, and not only were they originally known by another name (The Knowbody Else), they also started out with a different lead singer: Ronnie "Chicky Hawk" Smith. It wasn't long before the other members of the band came to the conclusion that they might be better suited with another singer, a fella by the name of James Mangrum, better known to the world at large as Jim Dandy. As such, Chicky Hawk became the band's stage production manager, Jim Dandy took over as front man, and the rest is rock 'n'.

In the end, High on the Hog probably won't appeal to anyone who isn't already a Southern rock fan, but anyone who enjoys this genre will find plenty to like on this album. 1 Swimmin' in Quicksand Black Oak Arkansas 3:20. 2 Back to the Land Black Oak Arkansas 2:26. 3 Movin' Black Oak Arkansas 3:13. 4 Happy Hooker Black Oak Arkansas 5:28. 5 Red Hot Lovin' Black Oak Arkansas 2:47. 6 Jim Dandy Black Oak Arkansas 2:39.
