Giving & Receiving is a quieter record than the already quiet Roof, and the push-and-pull between its big-but-small arrangements is less apparent. When the band jumps into an almost prog-y groove on "Mother Nature's Promise" it feels like those mid-1970s Beach Boys genre experiments, like a band ably and enjoyably co-opting a sound that they'll never return to.

The lounge elements of the album bring LAKE into a more adult genre. The music calls up the ‘60s era swinging music in its arrangements (or at least say the High Llamas rehash of this music), where every note colors perfectly inside the lines and provides the right shading for the song’s strict contours. Eli Moore produced Giving and Receiving with the help of labelmate Karl Blau and the founder, Calvin Johnson.
Lake's 2011 full-length album, Giving and Receiving soars with beautiful melodies and gentle, yet deliberate instrumentation. Written partially while staying at a little cabin in Northern Sweden, which band member Ashley Eriksson says is the only place she's ever truly heard silence, songs like "Skeleton Costume," and "Pilgrim's Day" were born in a shed there, and have the creaky barn wood/fresh air sound to prove it.
